World's largest wind farm nears finish line

The final wind turbine has been installed at the world's largest offshore wind farm. Located more than 100km from the Yorkshire coast, Ørsted's impressive 1.2GW Hornsea Project One features 174 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 turbines, standing at 190m above sea level.

Loadout of the turbine components has been taking place at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s factory in Hull, where the majority of blades were constructed, the components were then transported 120km out to sea by two specialist vessels; Bold Tern, owned by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier and DEME Group’s Sea Challenger.

Both vessels could transport four turbines per trip with it taking on average 12 hours of precision working to install each turbine's tower, nacelle and three blades. Overall
Bold Tern installed 91 turbines and Sea Challenger installed 83.

Duncan Clark, Ørsted Programme Director for Hornsea One said: “The milestone of this last turbine being installed only nine months after the first one was erected is just one small part of this record-breaking project. Hornsea One has truly paved the way for the next generation of offshore wind farms.

He continued: “At the time of taking on the project, it’s scale and the technical pioneering required seemed a Herculean challenge, but a truly extraordinary effort from all those involved have managed to make this impressive feat of engineering the new norm."

The project now enters the commissioning period and will be officially inaugurated in 2020 as the world’s first offshore wind farm to be able to generate over 1GW of electricity – enough to power well over one million UK homes.

Hornsea Project One
is the first of four projects Ørsted is developing off the Yorkshire coast. Hornsea Project Two secured a Contract for Difference in September 2017. The 1.4GW project will be located 89km off the Yorkshire Coast, and will feature 165 Siemens Gamesa turbines due to be operational in 2022. The consent application for  Hornsea Project Three is currently being review by the government with a decision expected in March 2020 and Ørsted intends to apply for consent for a fourth Hornsea site early next year.
