On the 11th, a fire broke out onboard cable lay vessel Responder off the coast of Tongyeong, South Korea. Despite fire-fighting efforts for over 12 hours, the vessel eventually sank on the 12 September.

No human injuries were reported amongst the 60 crew members however there are concerns of the possibility of marine pollution due to oil aboard the vessel.

Operated by KT Submarine, the 106m cable lay vessel had four cable tanks and can be fitted with a cable carousel. It was owned by Maersk and sailed under the name Maersk Responder before it was sold to KT Submarine. The vessel has supported cable operations at a number of offshore wind farms in Europe.
