Vattenfall is to host a virtual public consultation meeting for the ~350 MW Vesterhav Nord & Syd offshore wind farms, located in the Danish North Sea.

Vattenfall secured permits for the two wind areas in 2016 for 47.5 øre/kWh (€63.8/MWh). However, due to appeals against the project, the Danish Energy Board revoked parts of the permits relating to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the
Syd site in December 2018 and requested a supplemental EIA on the specific project design. Due to the similarities between the two sites, Vattenfall requested that the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) review the EIA process for the Vesterhav Nord project.

Last year, due to the additional EIA process, Vattenfall sought a three-year extension to the commissioning deadline, now 2023. Vattenfall has stated that, due to the delay, changes in market conditions and redesign of the project, the original construction and installation contracts for the main components (foundations, transition pieces and array cables as well as installation of turbines) have been cancelled and are to be re-tendered.

Vattenfall will hold a virtual Citizens' Meeting on the EIA for the
Vesterhav Nord & Syd project areas on 16th and 17th June. The EIAs for both projects are under consultation until 30th June. The Citizens' Meeting should have been held in the local area in the form of a workshop where all interested parties should have the opportunity to come by and get answers to questions but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all participation has been moved online.

Representatives of the DEA and Vattenfall along with several external consultants will be present. Topics of discussion include the new wind farm layout, visualisations and impacts, noise, tourism, wildlife and so on.

Following the consultation, the DEA expects to make its final decision on permits and EIA approval in September/October 2020.

Vesterhav Nord will have a capacity of 180 MW and will consist of 21 SG 8.0-167 DD turbines, each with a rated power of 8.4 MW. Vesterhav Syd will have a capacity of 170 MW and will consist of 20 turbines. Combined, the projects will supply electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 350,000 Danish households.
