Princess Elizabeth Island Converter

The Energy Island will connect up to 3.5 GW of offshore wind in the new Princess Elisabeth Zone (PEZ) and facilitate a connection point for (hybrid) interconnectors e.g. UK and Denmark. The design foresees the connection of 2,1 GW via 3 AC substations and the connection of 1,4 GW via a HVDC station. The energy island is connected to shore by means of six 220kV AC cables and one HVDC cable system. The Belgian windfarms (and other renewables) developers will be able to connect at the 66kV level. The new design replaces original plans for a MOG II concept based on (up to three 700MW HVAC platforms or two 1 GW platforms). An energy island will enable optimisation of space and infrastructure with heightened potential of cross border connections to help secure power supply in Belgium
