Other Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München (SWM) officially put the offshore wind farm Sandbank into operation by organizing a public barbecue in the city park (Stadtpark) of Hamburg. The “wind power barbecue” resembles the aim of Vattenfall and SWM to make the diverse usage possibilities of climate friendly electricity of the North Sea more tangible: For example, the conversion of electricity to heat on an electric grill.

Fully Commissioned The 288MW Sandbank wind farm was fully commissioned three months ahead of schedule.

Various factors have accelerated the installation of the Sandbank wind turbines. All involved companies entered the installation phase in a well and intensely prepared manner which resulted in a very good co-operation. The installation vessel performed well with the effect that, under good weather conditions, the team was able to install one wind turbine per day.
During the commissioning phase of the wind turbines a modified type of vessel (including “walk-to-work” gangway) was deployed by the project for the first time in the German North Sea. This system equalizes the wave motions of the North Sea and features a special gangway that enables the commissioning teams to step over to the wind turbines directly, with sea conditions of up to 2.5 metres in height. The new concept also enables for work with enhanced safety standards and to be carried out 24 hours per day.

Generating Power The first of a total of 72 wind turbines has successively exported power to the grid. Sandbank is expected to be fully connected to the grid, and to be delivering at full capacity by early spring 2017.
First power was supplied with less than 50% of the planned 72 turbines installed; with shortened commissioning times, the overall project cost can be reduced by frontloaded revenues.
During the commissioning phase of the wind turbines the service operations vessel "Acergy Viking" will be deployed by the project. By using this modified type of ship, the project expects a significant three months gain of time compared to the original planning. This “walk-to-work” vessel features a special gangway system which enables the commissioning teams to climb onto the wind turbines directly. The new concept also enables for work with enhanced safety standards and to be carried out 24 hours per day.

Turbine Installation MPI Adventure has successfully erected the first Siemens SWT-4.0-130 wind turbine at Sandbank, namely "SB 69A".
Siemens has developed an optimised concept for the construction and commissioning of the wind turbines. It decreased the turbine installation plans to 89 days or 23% shorter than originally scheduled. During the commissioning phase SOV Acergy Viking will be used: employing this modified vessel should allow the project to commission three months prior to original planning. The "walk-to-work" vessel features a gangway system, can equalise the effect of any waves caused by motion of the ship and is capable of operating in sea conditions with waves of up to 2.5m in height. The new concept also plans for work to be carried out 24 hours per day.

Array Cable Installation VBMS completed its scope of 76 array cables. VBMS installed and post-lay buried the cables. Over a period of two months the vessels Ndurance and Ndeavor performed the simultaneous cable installation and placement of messenger wires, cable burial, cable connection, and cable testing works. For this project, VBMS successfully launched its in-house post-lay burial ROV 107-1100. In September 2015 the vessel Stemat spirit installed the first two strings, before the Ndurance arrived in April 2016.

Array Cable Installation The Stemat Spirit has laid the first subsea power cable between monopiles "SB 28C" and "SC 29C". Each string will link a total of nine turbines, with every two strings connected to one another in order to ensure operation of the turbines even in the case of cable damage. To begin with, the cables are placed on the seabed and later injected at a minimum burial depth of 0.6m (although some may be buried at just over 1m depth).
