Rentel substation foundation installed

STX Europe has announced that the offshore substation foundation for the Rentel offshore wind farm has been installed off the coast of Belgium in the North Sea.

Installation was carried out last week and was executed by GeoSea, a DEME Group subsidiary, using its jack-up installation vessel, Innovation. The foundation consists of a 1,050t monopile, a 240t J-tube cage and 750t transition piece.

The topside, weighing in at 1,200t, is still under construction at STX yard in Saint-Nazaire, France. It is scheduled for installation at the start of 2018.

The vessel has been active on the site since July installing foundations for the offshore wind turbines. It is being loaded out with monopiles and transition pieces at the project's construction base in Rotterdam.

The wind farm is located approximately 40km north of Oostende, and will have an installed capacity of 309MW. An operations and maintenance centre is in the process of being constructed in the Port of Oostende to serve as a base during the construction and operation of the project.

From the Port of Oostende the different components of the wind turbines: blades, nacelles and tower elements will be pre-assembled and prepared. They will then be loaded aboard the selected installation vessel for installation offshore.

First power is expected to be generated mid-2018 and the array is expected to meet the energy demands of 288,000 households annually. The eight shareholders behind the project reached financial close in October 2016.
