The French government concluded its extensive public consultation on 'the future of the sea and our coastlines' on April 26, 2024, after a comprehensive deliberation spanning from November 23, 2023. The initiative aimed to chart France's maritime trajectory up to 2050, addressing key concerns regarding ecosystem preservation and sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

Over the course of five months, more than 300 events were organised both online and in various locations across the four French maritime regions: Eastern Channel – North Sea, North Atlantic - Western Channel, South Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. These events saw an impressive turnout, with over 20,000 individuals actively engaging in discussions, contributing to the dialogue on harmonising human activities with marine ecosystems.

Among the notable events was 'The Sea in 3D,' a groundbreaking initiative that convened nearly 400 citizens across five cities in France to deliberate on fundamental principles of maritime management. Digital tools, including participatory platforms and interactive resources provided by the Maritime Chair of Nantes University and "Experience," saw significant usage, with nearly 200,000 people leveraging these resources to participate in the discourse.

The culmination of the debate marks a significant milestone, with organisers now embarking on a two month process to collate and analyse the wealth of contributions received. The ensuing report, scheduled for publication by June 26, 2024, will encapsulate the insights and recommendations gleaned from the public discourse.

Upon publication of the report:

- The project owner will have three months to review the findings and respond to the recommendations derived from the public debate.

- The National Commission for Public Debate will release its comprehensive report on the deliberations, further amplifying the voices and concerns expressed by the participants.
- The conclusion of the public debate underscores France's commitment to fostering inclusive and informed decision-making processes, ensuring that the future of its maritime spaces is shaped collaboratively and sustainably.
