€1.3bn tender launched for Viking Link

The UK's National Grid and Danish system operator Energinet.dk have launched €1.3bn (£1.13bn) tender for the Viking Link interconnector project, a 1.4GW submarine cable linking the national grids of the UK and Denmark.

This tender concerns multiple contracts for the detailed design, engineering, procurement, manufacture, installation, construction, testing, commissioning, spares provision, operational handover and maintenance of an interconnector between the UK and Denmark.

Seven lots are up for grabs, six of which concern submarine and underground cables and one which covers the establishment of converter stations in both Bicken Fen (UK) and Revsing (DK). The converter stations would be used to change direct current electricity into the alternating current for import and vice versa for export.The tender is open until the 17th February.

Viking Link will have a HVDC capacity between 1,000MW and 1,400MW. Viking Link will link Britain and Denmark’s electricity systems, enabling both countries to import and export electricity. This will help boost the energy security of both countries and export power when not needed. It is being developed in co-operation between National Grid Viking Link Ltd and Energinet.dk, the Danish electricity transmission system operator.

On 12 November 2014 Ofgem's governing body, Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (GEMA), granted an Electricity Interconnector licence for the project which is is due to reach first power by the end of 2020. Viking Link is scheduled to be operational in 2022.
