ABB secures servicing for UK wind farms

ABB has secured an electrical services contract to service 54, 3.6 MW offshore wind turbine generators on Lynn & Inner Dowsing offshore windfarm (LID) located three miles off the coast of Lincolnshire, England.

The site has been operating since 2009 and comprises 54, Siemens Wind turbines fitted with 3.6MW ABB generators that provide enough electricity for half the homes in the county of Lincolnshire. Power is transmitted via subsea cables to shore and then by underground cables to a new substation at Middlemarsh, Skegness.
After some nine months of developing relations with LID, ABB was asked to tender for support services for the offshore wind farms. “The idea of working directly with a wind farm operator was attractive to us as normally our work is through OEMs,” explains Peter Wright, ABB’s service manager.

“Key to success would be ensuring that ABB could support the third party equipment as well as the 3.6MW ABB generators. Also it was imperative that we could demonstrate our partnership capabilities and that we had a high regard for health and safety. In fact we achieved the highest score in the tender process for our health and safety performance.

“The partnership was central to LID’s desire to take on active ownership of its operations, rather than using the OEM model. This meant that LID wanted a partnership support arrangement in place with a number of key suppliers that ultimately included ABB for the electrical equipment services for both onshore and offshore.”

The contract includes the electrical maintenance and support services for onshore and offshore electrical equipment, which will be delivered by ABB. Mechanical, control and other support activities are being supplied by LID and other partners.

Among the electrical equipment included within the preventive maintenance contract are generators, convertors and onshore substation and offshore transformers, switchgear and cabling, along with onshore substation emergency response. Third party equipment covered includes GE Converteam converters and Ormazabal manufactured offshore medium voltage transformers and switchgear.

“The contract shows how ABB can combine skills and knowledge from across its organisation to provide a tailor made servicing solution for clients. Our strong relationships between different businesses means that we can offer the total solution that LID needs,”
says Wright.
