Atlantis Resources to decommission SeaGen S

Alantis Resources will decommission its SeaGen S tidal device 1.2MW this year which has been operating since 2008 at Strangford Lough, Northen Ireland.

Atlantis Resources acquired the turbine's manufacturer, Marine Current Turbines, in April 2015 from Siemens and as a result, collected data which it believes to be essential to the next phase of tidal deployment.

The SeaGen S system features two grid connected turbines, each 600kv, on a grounded monopile structure. The four footed structure, 18m by 12 on each foot, is supported on a 1m diameter pin pile on each corner. The centre structure is raised at round 2m above the sea level, a design aimed to mitigate the seadbed footprint.

Stephen Ward, Director of Power Generation at Atlantis Resources says:  “The iconic commercial, grid connected 1.2MW tidal stream device at Strangford Lough was installed in 2008 and has successfully generated 10 GWh of electricity to date. During this time, both SeaGen S 600kW turbines have operated as an essential research and design platform, providing our team with a wealth of data and key engineering and environmental data.  The lessons learnt from SeaGen S have been used in the development of the next generation of the SeaGen 1MW tidal turbine.

“This year, we will embark on the next stage of the R&D process and focus on decommissioning the SeaGen device. This operation will be the first commercial scale turbine development to be decommissioned and will help us to understand the complete life-cycle of a tidal stream development.”

The SeaGen s project, valued at approx GBP 17m (EUR 22m), was connect to the grid and fully commissioned in July 2008. Decommissioning is expected commence in June and take approximately 12 months to complete.
