Codling Wind Park, Ireland's largest Phase One offshore wind project, located off the County Wicklow coast, announces the finalisation of its project design and layout, marking a significant milestone in its development. As part of this announcement, Codling Wind Park confirms a noteworthy 25% reduction in the number of turbines required for the project.

Initially anticipated to encompass around 100 turbines, Codling Wind Park now reveals plans for a maximum of 75 turbines, a reduction of 25 turbines. The minimum proposed turbine tip height is set at 288 metres, ensuring efficient energy generation while minimising visual impact.

Despite the reduction in turbine numbers, Codling Wind Park remains poised to deliver an impressive generating capacity of 1,300 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity, capable of powering over one million Irish homes. This accounts for nearly half (48%) of all permanent dwellings in Ireland, contributing significantly to the nation's renewable energy goals.
Jointly developed by Fred. Olsen Seawind and EDF Renewables, Codling Wind Park is a critical energy infrastructure project poised to deliver a quarter of Ireland's 2030 offshore wind target. It represents a substantial investment in Ireland's energy future and is aligned with the nation's objective of generating 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Ahead of the project's planning application submission scheduled for summer 2024, Codling Wind Park is engaging with the local community through a series of public engagements. These engagements aim to provide stakeholders with comprehensive details on the project's design, layout, and environmental considerations, fostering transparency and community involvement.

Project Director Scott Sutherland emphasised Codling Wind Park's commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement, stating, "The reduction and layout of the reduced number of turbines was always key in that regard." He further highlighted the establishment of a Community Benefit Fund (CBF) of up to €200 million, which will support local community-based initiatives over a twenty-year period.

Upon completion, Codling Wind Park is anticipated to become Ireland's largest offshore wind farm, generating economic growth and employment opportunities. With construction potentially commencing in 2026-27, subject to receiving necessary approvals, Codling Wind Park represents a significant step towards Ireland's renewable energy future.
