Contracts issued for East Anglia One base

ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) and Associated British Ports (ABP) have awarded £10m in contracts for development work at the Port of Lowestoft to support the £2.5bn East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm.

SPR is leasing land adjacent to Hamilton Dock in order to establish and operations and maintenance base. The building will support the wind farm during its construction and 30 year operational lifecycle. NRS Group has been appointed to design and construct the base which will feature warehousing and office faculties.

ABP has appointed McLaughlin & Harvey to design and construct pontoons and land-side utilities to support crew transfer vessel operation from Hamilton Dock.

Charlie Jordan, ScottishPower Renewables Project Director for East Anglia ONE, said: "Lowestoft is going to be the home of our windfarm for the next three decades, so it is pleasing to see construction work underway at the Port. The new facility will be a hive of activity for engineers and technicians, and the base for our marine operations to support the day-to-day operations of the wind farm. In total around 100 people will be employed full-time at the port when East Anglia ONE is completed, and the thousands of contractors and supply chain operators using the site every year will contribute substantially to the local economy.”

The East Anglia One project is being realised solely by ScottishPower Renewables and is located approximately 45km east of Lowestoft, UK. The 714MW array will feature 102 SWT-7.0-154 direct-drive wind turbines, each with a capacity of 7MW.

Siemens Gamesa is manufacturing the nacelles in Cuxhaven, Germany and plans to produce the corresponding wind turbine blades for the project at its new facility in Hull. Navantia and Lamprell are currently fabricating the turbine foundations.

Offshore construction is estimated to start in the coming months with the pre-piling work for the jacket foundations. Full commissioning is scheduled for 2020 and the project is expected to meet the energy demands of 500,000 British households annually.

“This project will allow us to continue to support the prosperity of the local community, affirming the Port of Lowestoft’s place as East of England’s innovative Energy Hub.”

In 2017, the Port of Lowestoft supported the construction of Galloper offshore wind farm and hosted its construction coordination base.
