Port of BlythOne of the world’s longest ever wind turbine blades has been safely delivered to the North East for testing as part of the DemoWind initiative, a Europe-wide development project for next generation wind energy technology.

The 88-metre component arrived at the Port of Blyth this week and will now undergo testing as part of the EU funded initiative. Turbine manufacturer Adwen is working with Blyth-based ORE Catapult to perform a schedule of representative testing on the blade fabricated for their new 8MW offshore wind turbine.

Once testing is completed, the blade is set to be used on a prototype turbine currently being installed at a test site in Germany.

Port of Blyth Chief Executive Martin Lawlor, said: “We’re delighted to have played our part in delivering this huge blade successfully to ORE Catapult. It’s great to prove that the Port of Blyth can safely handle such large components, which will soon be considered standard size in the coming years”.

DemoWind aims to support the development and demonstration of technologies which can reduce the cost of offshore wind energy. It targets capital intensive projects which would be difficult for a single country to support and aims to align research from the six partner countries Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the UK.
