Dieppe-Le Tréport gets thumbs up

The French Agency for Biodiversity (AFB) delivered a favourable opinion for the 496MW Dieppe-Le Tréport offshore wind farm.

The project is being developed by a consortium of ENGIE, EDP Renewables and Caisse des Dépôts and is set to feature up to 62 Siemens Gamesa 8.0-167 DD wind turbines with 81m long blades.

Last autumn the Management Board for the Marine Nature Park of Estuaires Picardie and the Opal Sea delivered a negative opinion for the project expressing concerns about the impacts to the local wildlife and the environment.

The developers subsequently proposed several revisions to tackle the issues identified by the Park. These include raising the turbines by 15m to minimise the collision risk to birds, to stop pile hammering during the breeding season, to use a technique to reduce heavy metal pollution caused by pile corrosion and to increase the budget to €8m for the Scientific Interest Group (SIG) which will be created to carry out scientific and technical follow-up.

On the basis of these revisions the Board of directors for the AFB has now adopted a favourable opinion with only a few remaining reservations to be followed-up. According to the Department for International Trade, full commissioning is anticipated during 2022. The project is expected to produce 2,000 GWh per year, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 850,000 people.
