Jan De NulJan De Nul has installed the fifth and final MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbine at the Blyth Offshore Demonstrator wind farm in the UK. Work was completed using jack-up vessel Vole au Vent.

Wholly owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles, the Blyth Offshore Demonstrator wind farm is being developed by EDF Energy Renewables, a 50-50 UK joint venture between EDF Energies Nouvelles and EDF Energy.

Located around 6.5km off the coast of Blyth, the turbines will have a total generating capacity of 41.5MW and once operational are expected to produce enough electricity to power around 34,000 homes.

The turbines are mounted on gravity based foundations which were designed and built by Royal BAM Group in the Neptune dry dock on the Tyne. The foundations were floated into position off the coast of Northumberland and submerged onto the seabed using a new “float and submerge” technique.

The wind farm will be EDF Energy Renewables’ second offshore wind farm construction following the Teesside wind farm off the North East coast at Redcar.
