French designate four areas for pilot floating wind turbines

Ségolène Royal, the French Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, designated four areas for the development of pilot farms for floating wind turbines in three different regions: Brittany, Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

These four areas are considered the most favorable in terms of technical requirements and acceptability. They are located off the l’île de Groi (click to see detail), des étangs de Leucate(Click to see detail); La commune de Gruissan and Faraman lighthouse.

A call for "floating wind farms pilot" projects will now be launched for these four areas and published before the end of July. Funded by the future investment program (PIA) it will help to launch a promising new industrial sector for France.

According to the Department for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy,Floating wind presents many advantages including:-

Access to greater wind deposits, allowing to install wind turbines in previously inaccessible deep zones.
Improving environmental integration projects , replacing foundations by anchors.

The development of a new industry such as this contributes to the achievement of the ambitious target set by the energy transition law for green growth, whereby there is the demand to produce 40% of France's electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and to open new markets for French industrialists, both on national territory and for export.

The decision comes after a thorough process of analysis and consultation and following the timetable as:-
Spring 2014 - Summer 2014: Technical studies to identify the location potential and initial definition of suitable areas for the deployment of wind farms in floating offshore wind pilot projects.
Fall 2014 - Spring 2015: under the umbrella of the prefects and development coordinators and as part of an integrated maritime policy, local consultations with all maritime users , particularly fishermen, to clarify the scope of favorable regions.
