Japan's first floating offshore wind turbine has gone into commercial operation following its demonstration period. The Hitachi HTW2.0-80 downwind turbine stands 80m above the sea level and was tested between 2010 and 2015 1km off the coast of Kabashima island.

Following its demonstration period, the device has been relocated to a new position off of the coast of Fukue Island and has been renamed as the Sakiyama Floating 2MW Wind Turbine.

The 2MW turbine has been exporting power ashore via a 5km export cable, since 26th March. The cable allows for all the power generated by the turbine to be transferred whereas at its previous location, the turbine was limited to 35% capacity due to the size of the 600kW export cable.

The turbine sits atop of a hybrid spar foundation that is moored using a 3-point catenary system. The submerged section of the floating foundation consists of a steel and concrete cylindrical structure. The whole structure has a weight of 3,400t and is 172m in length.

A subsidiary of the TODA Corporation have led development and will be the operators of the turbine.
