nCentric offers 5G in the North Sea

Offshore wireless network operator nCentric in cooperation with sister company Citymesh aims to established 5G internet connectivity in the North Sea for offshore wind farm operators.

In all construction and maintenance phases of a wind farms, users can only rely on slow, limited bandwidth, or very high cost , i.e. VSAT, connectivity, according to nCentric.

nCentric aims to give the offshore users a reliable, high speed, high capacity internet link which covers the full Belgian North Sea even back to shore at a lower cost.

The roll out will be done in several phases starting with the installation of three network stations offshore, followed by four systems onshore. This will enable the full 5G coverage in the entire Belgian North Sea. Installation costs are estimated at few million euros and the first part will be operational from February 2018.

Van Oord will use this technology in combination with the nCentric Nova nodes for it’s cable lay operations at the Norther offshore wind farm. A total of 11 vessels will be equipped with this technology providing access to high speed internet on board at a lower cost than that of the standard VSAT.

The €1.2bn Norther offshore wind farm will be constructed off the Belgian continental shelf. It is owned by Elicio (50%), Eneco (25%), and Diamond Generating Europe (25%) and is the third wind project to be installed off the Belgian coast. It will feature 44 MHI Vestas V164-8.0 turbines and will have a maximum capacity of 369.6MW. It is expected to generate enough energy to supply nearly 400,000 households.
