Nordsee One foundations in place

GeoSea has completed the installation of all 54 foundations, including monopiles and transition pieces, for the Nordsee One offshore wind project located in the German sector of the North Sea.

The work began in December 2015 and, according to Northland Power, the work was successfully completed six weeks ahead of schedule on April 16, 2016.

The 70m foundations, manufactured by Ambau, stand in waters depths between 26-29m. Each one weighs approximately 900t and installation was performed by GeoSea, a DEME Group subsidiary. The jack-up vessel DP2 Innovation was utilised by GeoSea who confirmed that although the foundations have been installed, scour protection works are ongoing.

"Completion of the foundation installation is an important project milestone, and I'm pleased to report that the project remains on time and on budget," noted John Brace, CEO of Northland. "I would like to acknowledge the collective efforts of the project team and contractors, and our partner RWE; we look forward to continued collaboration over the coming months."
Installation of the inter-array cables and the offshore substation will begin in the coming months and wind turbine installation is anticipated to begin in early 2017.

The Nordsee One wind farm, located 40km north of Juist Island, will consist of 54 Senvion wind turbines which will give it an overall installed capacity of 332MW.

Once commissioned in 2017, the wind farm is expected to produce an annual output of more than 1,300 GWh of electrical energy, enough to supply the equivalent of approximately 400,000 German households. Nordsee One is owned by Northland (85%) and RWE International SE (15%).
