Rio de Janeiro signs offshore wind energy development memorandum

Neoenergia and the government of Rio de Janeiro have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of studies that encourage the future execution of offshore wind power generation projects on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The signing took place during the Brazil Offshore Wind Summit 2024 in Rio de Janeiro. This is already the fourth MoU signature carried out by Neoenergia for the development of offshore wind generation in the country. The company is also conducting studies to promote and evaluate the viability of offshore wind power in other states such as Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará.

According to a global law firm, Brazil had around 189 GW of offshore wind projects being evaluated by the federal environmental licensing agency, Ibama, as of July 2023.
