The Sichuan Electric Power Construction Company has been awarded a turnkey Engineering Procurement Construction and Installation (EPCI) contract for the offshore substation associated with the Huaneng Rudong 300MW offshore wind farm.

Located in the East China Sea, the 110kV offshore substation will be used to export power generated from the Huaneng Rudong 300MW wind farm to the onshore grid. The substation will increase the voltage of the electricity generated in order to reduce losses across the export cable. A 220kV onshore substation will then prepare the electricity for integration into the onshore grid.

The Huaneng Rudong 300MW wind farm is located off the coast off Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. It is expected that the project will generated nearly 740 million kWh of energy annually. Developers recently confirmed that the wind farm will comprise of a total of 70 turbines: 38 Shanghai Electric 4MW, 12 Vision 4.2MW and 20 Haizhuang 5MW units.

China is new to offshore wind technology and recently carried out the installation and commissioning of its first offshore substation, located at the 150MW CGN Rudong Demonstration project.
