European Transmission Operator (TSO) TenneT has released details relating to its planned investment of approximately two billion euros for the development and construction of an offshore grid with 3,450MW of connection capacity for planned wind farms off the coasts of Zeeland and Holland.

A further four billion euros will be invested in the high-voltage grid on land,  70% is required for expansion of the network, 20% for replacement of parts of the infrastructure and 10% for other investments.

TenneT stated that the investment comes partly due to the increased international connections by sea and by land. It explained that the Netherlands is taking on a more prominent position in the Northwest European energy market where the development renewable energy is becoming more pronounced.

TenneT explained that the Netherlands will form further electricity highways with other countries in the form of a 2400MW link with Belgium from 2019, 700MW subsea interconnect with Denmark (COBRA Cable), a 1000MW subsea interconnector with Great Britain (BritNed cable), a 700MW subsea interconnector with Norway (NorNed cable) and two links with Germany; 2,450 MW in 2017 and approximately 4,250 MW in 2020.
