The Dutch senate has adopted a new law with regards to offshore wind energy. This is a crucial step for the Netherlands in the transition to more sustainable energy.

With the new law being  implemented the Dutch industry has an opportunity to prove that the long term cost of offshore wind power can be reduced further. Besides the necessary innovations, this gives a big boost to employment, which is estimated for onshore wind and offshore wind at 40,000 full-time jobs in 2023. The new law also enables the Netherlands to further work towards the European target of 14% renewable energy by 2020.

According to NWEA Ministers Kamp (Economic Affairs) and Schultz van Haegen (Infrastructure and Environment) have created a clear framework for a stable and efficient deployment of wind energy projects in the North Sea.

Hans Timmers, president NWEA: "The new law creates the Dutch offshore wind energy government constraints to build at the lowest possible cost offshore wind farms. This is of great importance for the growth of renewable energy and represents a major boost for employment. Achieving the goals of the Energy Agreement is another big step closer. "

Next year one million households will be powered with electricity by offshore wind. The existing and under construction wind farms in the Dutch North Sea account for almost 1,000 megawatt.

Thanks to the newly adopted law of offshore wind  3,500 megawatts may be available in the coming years, and possibly more in the future.
