VBMS, a subsidiary of Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V., announces that it has secured a contract alongside NKT Cables for the installation of two export cables which for from the Borssele Alpha offshore grid project that will connect the Borssele I and Borssele II to the Dutch onshore grid.

The contract scope includes the supply and installation of two 61km long 220 kV AC high-voltage export cables which will be routed via the Western Skeldt estuary and will come ashore near the existing high-voltage substation at Borssele, the Netherlands. The cables will be manufactured in Cologne, Germany and will be delivered in 2018.

To minimise maintenance to the cables during their operational lifetime, Boskalis will pre-sweep and dredge the shallow parts of the route, which will enable VBMS to simultaneously lay and bury the export cables at the required depth. The project is scheduled to be carried out in the period 2018-2019.

The contract value of VBMS’ share is approximately EUR 70m (GBP 62.4m) and NKT's share is valued at approximately EUR 77m (GBP 68.6m)

Separately, the option has been awarded for the installation of the export cables that will connect the Borssele offshore wind farms 3 and 4 to the Dutch onshore grid (Borssele Beta), subject to financial close.

The tender round for Borssele III & Borssele IV closed on the 29th September and the Dutch Government received a total of 26 bids. The government has set the maximum capacity for Borssele III between 330-360MW whilst Borssele IV may have a capacity between 350-380MW. The project combined will have a minimum capacity of 680MW of power and are expected to supply enough to supply 775,000 households annually.

Back in July The Netherlands’ Minister of Economic Affairs has awarded DONG Energy the concession to build the Dutch offshore wind farms Borssele I and Borssele II 22km off the coast of Zeeland. DONG Energy won the concessions with an average bid strike price, excluding transmission costs of 72.70 EUR per MWh during the first 15 years of the contract.
