Image result for Wave hubWave Hub Limited (WHL) has submitted an environmental scoping report for the Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone (PDZ) and are considering a mix of wave and floating wind technology.

WHL is the seabed leaseholder for the new offshore energy site located between 13-21kms off the South Pembrokeshire coastline. The zone comprises a 90 sq km area with water depths of approximately 50m and a wave resource of 19 kW/m. It has the potential to support the demonstration of arrays with a generating capacity of up to 30MW for each project with a proposed onshore grid connection at Pembroke Dock Power Station.

WHL submitted the report to Natural Resources Wales and the Marine Management Organisation asking for a formal opinion on what issues should be covered by an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and what surveys need to be undertaken.

PDZ project manager Madeline Cowley stated that "by sharing the PDZ with floating wind we will be able to broaden access to finance for the project, bring forward development of the site and enable a phased installation of technology that will support commercialisation of both the wave and floating wind sectors."

"We know the PDZ would be a good location to test floating wind as it has a good wind resource and the water depth is suitable for most types of floating wind technology."

According to Cowley WHL has received a lot of interest from developers looking for sites to deploy at.

A consent application could be submitted in 2020 with consent granted by 2022 and the first electricity could be generated by 2024.

Wave Hub Ltd is also the operating company of Wave Hub, the offshore renewable energy test site off the north coast of Cornwall, with offices in Hayle and Pembroke Dock.
