Bernhard Schulte Offshore's new Service Operations Vessel (SOV), Windea La Cour has commenced work at the 600MW Gemini wind farm in the Netherlands. The vessel has been chartered by Siemens Wind Power Service to support the ongoing service and maintenance of 150 Siemens 4MW wind turbines at the project located in the North Sea.

The vessel will provide accommodation technicians and safely transport them to and from wind turbines using a walk to work access system.

After delivery of the vessel to Siemens in August, the vessel’s warehouse was loaded with spare parts, and the Siemens SCADA system was installed in the offices on board to monitor and remotely control the wind turbines.

During its sea trials, vessel builders Ulstein claimed that it proved a maximum speed of 12.1 knots going astern similar to its forward speed of 13.95 knots, giving increased flexibility when manoeuvring at sea.

The vessel sailed out for its first service campaign on 1st September, 2016.

“As the global leader in offshore wind service and the first company to deploy purpose-built SOVs, Siemens is dedicated to the development of innovative offshore service logistics that support efforts to bring down the costs associated with wind energy. We are delighted to be the first to charter this innovative new service operations vessel as we begin service operations at the Gemini wind farm in the Dutch part of the North Sea,”
said René Cornelis Wigmans, Head of Maritime and Aviation Solutions, Siemens Wind Power Service.

Bernhard Schulte has another SOV vessel under construction by the shipbuilding yard, Ulstein Verft. The ship was built, equipped and painted inside a covered dock hall which Ulstein explained ensures a controlled atmosphere for the best quality of work.

The vessel will be launched from the dock hall in two months time before going on sea trials at the end of the year.
