The Eneco Luchterduinen offshore wind project  has been officially opened. The 129MW project will generate enough electricity to supply 150,000 households.

Van Oord was responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the foundations, the electrical infrastructure, including the offshore transformer station, and the installation of the turbines. Van Oord deployed the offshore installation vessel Aeolus for installing the foundations and turbines. The construction process went extremely smooth: the wind project was completed within budget and delivered three months ahead of schedule.

The wind turbines were installed on monopile foundations more than 60 metres long. The offshore wind farm’s first foundation was driven into the seabed in August 2014. The foundations are uniquely engineered because the monopile and transition piece were built as a single component in this project.

Luchterduinen comprises of a total of 43 V112-3.0 Vestas 3MW turbines located 23 kilometres off the coast of Zandvoort and Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The offshore wind farm has a capacity of 129 megawatts and supplies sustainable energy to 150,000 households. This project is contributing to the fulfilment of the EU Energy Agreement. The agreement outlines that the Netherlands' must source 14% off their electricity from renewables sources by 2020.

In other news, Van Oord is currently constructing the Gemini offshore wind farm, located 85 kilometres off the coast of Groningen, the Netherlands. This offshore wind project, which will have a capacity of 600 megawatts, will be delivered in the first quarter of 2017. Van Oord also recently signed a contract to build the foundations for the British Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm (256 megawatts). The construction will start in the summer of 2016.
