Bold Tern

Heavy Maintenance and Construction

4C Offshore | Bold Tern
Gusto MCS designed the Bold Tern with customisation by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. Initially the vessel had a 800 ton crane which was also designed by Gusto MSC, as well as continuous type jacking systems. The vessel has DP2-class type dynamic positioning system and is fitted with a Voith Schneider propulsion system.

Bold Tern had a typical carrying capacity of 8 x 3.6 MW or 4 x 6.0 MW turbines or three jacket foundations suitable for 40m water depth but following upgrading in 2016, this was increased to four complete ‘multi MW’ turbines with full towers throughout the year in water depths of up to 55m – up to 60m in the summer.

A further upgrade in 2021/22 increased the lift capacity to 1,600 tons
and capable of installing foundations up to 1,500 tons and handling all known next generation turbines:
3 x SG 14-222DD
4 x SG 11.0-200DD
5 x SG 8.0-167DD
5 x MHI Vestas V164/174
3 x GE Haliade-X 12MW

To enable direct transfer of personnel to a turbine, Bold Tern has a gangway which can be deployed.
