Rescue efforts are underway after a catastrophic incident occurred off the coast of Hong Kong involving an offshore wind construction vessel. The vessel Fujing 001 was unfortunately caught in Typhoon Chaba on Saturday and suffered extensive damage.

The offshore wind construction vessel was about 300 km south-west of Hong Kong on Saturday and was struck by wind speeds of up to 144 km/h and swells of 10 meters. It signalled for support from the Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre. The vessel had been split in two after breaking anchor and most of the crew abandoned ship.

The Hong Kong Government Flying Service (GFS) managed to rescue three people at scene using helicopters. Later it reported that a fourth crew member was found, rescued and brought ashore. Those who have been rescued are in a stable condition.

GFS dispatched a total of four H175 helicopters and two CL605 helicopters and seven rescue vessels to support rescue operations. It all worked with local salvage and merchant vessels.

The  Fujing 001, owned by Shanghai Huajing Zhiyun Ocean Technology Co., Ltd., was supporting foundation and piling works at the
Yuedian Yangjiang Qingzhou I and II wind farms. The two projects are being developed together and will see the installation of a total of 92 typhoon resistant MySE11-230 offshore wind turbines.

Rescue operations resumed on Sunday after being suspended on Saturday night due to poor conditions.

Update:

According to local media reports, this morning the Guangdong Maritime Search and Rescue Centre revealed that 12 bodies have been found and are suspected to be seafarers from Fujing 001.
