A second Formosa UXO survey for Deep

Subsea surveyor Deep BV is performing an unexploded ordnance (UXO) geophysical survey at the Formosa 2 offshore wind farm, off Taiwan. Deep has previously worked at the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm, performing a similar UXO survey campaign in 2018. The company stated that ‘challenging weather conditions and local governmental regulations’ in the previous campaign meant it had garnered ‘significant’ expertise and experience, so it is confident of meeting the Formosa 2 challenges.

Formosa 1 Phase 2 was officially inaugurated at the end of last year. Formosa 1 is located around 6 kilometres off the west coast of the Miaoli district in the Taiwan Strait, in water depths ranging between 15 and 30 metres, and was completed across two phases. The total power generation capacity for both phases is 128 MW, which is expected to meet the power demand of 128,000 households in Taiwan.

The 378 MW Formosa 2 is expected to enter construction this year. It features 47 turbines and will be Taiwan’s biggest offshore wind farm when it is commissioned in 2021.
