Beatrice turbines commissioned

The last turbine has been commissioned at the Beatrice offshore wind farm off the Scottish Coast. The 588MW project is situated 13 km off the Caithness coast and its 84 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 are expected to be capable of generating enough electricity to power approximately 450,000 homes per year.

Wind turbine installation and commissioning works commenced offshore in July 2018 and was carried out using Swire Blue Ocean's jack-up turbine installation vessel Pacific Orca . Construction and marshalling operations were conducted from the Port of Nigg.

Each of Beatrice’s turbines, at 188m from sea level to blade tip, stands taller than the London Eye and the project is the largest offshore wind farm in the world to use jacket foundations. These jackets weigh around 1,000 tonnes each and are installed in water depths of over 56m.

The £2.6bn Beatrice project is being developed by Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited, owned by SSE Renewables, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Red Rock Power Limited. It was given the green light for construction following Financial Close on 23 May 2016. The project exported first power in July 2018.

SSE Renewables led on the construction process and will manage operations and maintenance from a new base in Wick, having invested over £20m in the coastal town to redevelop the harbour front and renovate two 200-year-old Thomas Telford buildings that will soon become home to up to 90 long-term members of staff.
