Block Island foundation takes barge hit

According to US media Providence Journal, Deepwater Winds offshore wind farm Block Island took a hit from one of the barges working on site. The hit from the barge dented one of its four hollow tubular legs.

“This is the kind of thing that can happen in construction projects, especially those offshore,” Deepwater said in a statement on Thursday. It has not yet been confirmed as to how the dent will be repaired, although it has been described as not a major problem.

The foundation was only installed last Tuesday, this process was delayed in the first place due to rough weather resulting in the barge being towed out.

Deepwater Wind added“Our flexible schedule provides us more than enough time to address things like bad weather or repairs such as this one, so our timeline remains on-track”. The foundation installation began this week and is expected to be completed mid September.

The Block Island wind farm is located 4.5km off the coast of Rhode Island, the project will install a total of 5 Haliade 150-6MW Alstom turbines with a total given power of 30MW. The project is expected to cost around $290 million (£186 million) (€ 261 million) with full commissioning expected for 2016.
