The 'button' was officially 'pressed' for the world's longest power cable connection, Viking Link between Denmark and the UK. Energinet's and British National Grid's joint investment of just under GBP 150 million is an important part of the green transition of the energy system.

The world's longest power cable connection, Viking Link from Denmark to the UK, has now been officially inaugurated. It happened at a festive ceremony this week in South Jutland, Denmark and Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, UK. The first three months of 2024 have been a running-in period for the connection, and as expected, traffic through the 765 km long cables has moved significantly more to the west than to the east in January, February and March: In the first three months of operation, Denmark has exported electricity 80 percent of the time.

In addition, Viking Link has already had earnings of approximately 20 million euros for equal sharing between Energinet and National Grid. Money that benefits the Danish electricity consumers, as Energinet can use the income to invest in the Danish electricity system.

CEO of Energinet, Thomas Egebo, said: "The establishment of Viking Link marks a huge milestone in our efforts for the green transition of our energy system. Not only the Danish, but also the European. Since we sent the first electrons through the cable at the end of December last year, we have sent large amounts of power to our English friends, thus ensuring that the green power from Danish solar cells and wind turbines is used most efficiently. The connection, and electrical interconnections in general, also contribute to our security of supply, and the value of this type of connection cannot be overstated in a world like today, where security of supply is not a given." Thomas Egebo continues: "Making an electricity connection between Denmark and England is in itself a huge achievement. But for external reasons, it has also been a long haul to get here. Challenges such as Brexit, the corona pandemic, Ukraine war, energy crisis, blockade of the Suez Canal, drying up of the Rhine, raw material shortages and supply problems. All things that have affected the project along the way, and yet we were finished on time, and with a nice complete job."
