Hexicon ABSwedish design and engineering company Hexicon AB has been given approval by the Scottish Government for the construction of its Dounreay Trì floating wind farm project.

Hexicon AB submitted the application to the Highland Council, Orkney island Council and Scottish Government for the construction and operation of the project in October 2016. It was approved on the 21st February 2017 by the Highland Council and was passed to Marine Scotland for assessment as part of its recommendation to the Scottish Ministers.

Hexicon plans to have the Dounreay Trì project in operation by the summer of 2018. The project consists of a floating semi-submersible platform designed by Hexicon which will support two offshore wind turbines with a combined capacity between 8-12MW.

The platforms are not limited by water depth and allow for the deployment of offshore wind in remote areas where winds are stronger and more stable. Wind farms can therefore be operational out of sight and in areas where the environmental impact is minimal.

The export cable will bring electricity generated by the project ashore near Sandside bay, from here the electricity will be integrated into the grid using the existing substation at Dounreay.
