EEW to bring 30 TPs to Hornsea Two

EEW Offshore Structures (Britain) (EEW OSB) has secured an order for 30 transition pieces (TPs) for the Hornsea Two offshore wind farm. The long-term co-operation between developer Ørsted and EEW continues with this fifth order, which follows TP production for the Burbo Bank Extension, Walney Extension, Hornsea One, and Borssele 1&2 projects. The TPs are to be manufactured at EEW’s Teesside base in the United Kingdom, with production scheduled to start in September 2019.

The 1.4 GW Hornsea Two is due for commissioning in 2022, when it will overtake its sister project Hornsea One as the world’s largest offshore wind farm. The project will be based in the North Sea’s Hornsea Zone, and Ørsted estimates that it will be capable of supplying clean electricity to over 1.3 million UK homes.

The multi-million pound contract means that EEW’s 180 employees in Teesside will have secure work, including rolling primary steel, welding, coating and painting the tubular structures, and fitting them out internally with secondary structures.

Duncan Clark, Programme Director for Hornsea Two, has emphasised the contract’s good news for local employability, stating: “EEW OSB shows how UK companies can benefit from offshore wind. The facility, based on Haverton Hill in Teesside, has steadily been winning contracts in offshore wind and developing its business since its revival in 2015, and is one of an increasing number of UK firms growing their businesses as the global offshore wind market expands.

“We’re delighted to be working with EEW OSB again and this contract is an example of the Sector Deal in action. By placing successive orders which allow continuous production, we can provide suppliers with the opportunity they crave, to drive their continual improvement and develop a sustainably competitive market position based on productivity and efficiency.  This will secure jobs and investment in facilities up and down the country, and by creating long-term relationships we are not only able to work with them on our UK projects, but also enable them to export too.”
