Elia Grid International (EGI) has entered into a strategic alliance agreement with the EuroAsia Interconnector, the official EU project developer of the 2,000MW electricity interconnector between Israel, Cyprus Crete - Attica, Greece and Europe.

The agreement formalises a close cooperation with EGI for the development and implementation of the EuroAsia Interconnector, aproject designed to connect the national electricity grids of Israel, Cyprus and Crete-Attica, Greece.

Designated as European Project of Common Interest (PCI), the “electricity highway” project would see the installation of a 1,518km subsea HVDC cable. The project would see a link established between Israel to Cyprus with another link between Cyprus and Crete. A further connection between Crete and Greece would link all three countries.

The energy highway will bridge the two continents; with a total length of 1520kms, and creates a reliable alternative route for the transfer of electric energy to and from Europe

Elia Grid International has been chosen as a strategic partner because of its experience with developing electricity interconnectors and projects at sea, such as 1,000MW subsea Nemo Link interconnector between the UK and Belgium.
