Equinor seeks to merge extension projects

Equinor is looking to develop the 317 MW Sheringham Shoal (SEP) and 402 MW Dudgeon (DEP) extension projects as a single integrated project, with a shared grid option. A Scoping Report on the matter has been submitted to the Secretary of State.

According to Equinor, this approach reduces the transmission infrastructure’s environmental impact, a key concern in the sensitive Southern North Sea area. An integrated grid solution would require 66 kV array cables to connect both wind farms to a single offshore substation located in the SEP area and 220 kV export cabling to shore.

Two landfall options are under consideration, the Weybourne area and the Bacton area. A grid connection offer has been received from National Grid for connection at Norwich Main. Because of the different ownership structure of the two projects, a separate grid option is also being proposed. Equinor has part ownership in both projects and is leading the development. It anticipates submitting consent applications to the planning inspectorate in Q3 2021.

The wind farms are two of seven extension projects, totalling 2.85 GW, chosen by the Crown Estate to progress to the award of development rights, following the Habitats Regulations Assessment.
