16/03/2023 Windar Renovables

In Avilés this past weekend (11 & 12 March 2023), Windar Renovables, a global leader in the manufacturing of wind towers and offshore foundations, began the first loading of the transition pieces for Iberdrola's second offshore wind farm in Germany,
Baltic Eagle (476 MW).

10 out of 50 transition pieces began the journey from Avilés to the sorting port of Sassnitz in Germany, where they will be stored until preparations for transport to the Baltic Eagle site have been finalised. Each transition piece is 15 metres high, 6.5 metres in diameter and weighs 240 tons.

Baltic Eagle is located northeast of the island of Rügen off the coast of Pomerania in the Baltic Sea, and will consist of 50 wind turbines with a capacity of 9.5 MW each, generating 1.9 TWh per year. The turbines are to be installed on monopile foundations and will cover an area of 40 km2. Baltic Eagle is part of Iberdrola's "Baltic Hub" in the Baltic Sea, and together with
Wikinger (350 MW) and the planned Windanker (300 MW), the Hub will have an installed capacity of more than 1.1 GW by 2026, highlighting Iberdrola's strategic focus on the Baltic Sea.

The realisation of the Baltic Eagle project has contributed to the creation of 800 jobs, based on 1.3 million hours worked. Manufacturing for the project commenced at the end of 2021, with works expected to continue until May 2023 when the final loading of all parts is complete. Foundation installation is expected to be between the second and third quarter of 2023.

This news follows the announcement in February that the
Offshore Substation Topside (OSS) for the Baltic Eagle project was installed. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2024 and will provide clean energy for 475,000 homes and avoid the emission of almost one million tons of CO2 per year.
