GE Renewable Energy is to open a new offshore wind factory and development centre in China. The factory will be opened in Guangdong Province, at Jieyang’s Offshore Wind cluster, where GE will assemble much-anticipated Haliade-X 12 MW turbines; the operation and development centre will be in the city of Guangzhou.

As China’s demand for offshore wind is growing, GE anticipates that its Jieyang office will be in the right place at the right time. The factory’s site construction will commence this year, and is expected to conclude within two years. Assembly production will start in H2 2021. It will be a part of an offshore wind industrial park, aiming to marshal harbour and industry suppliers to serve regional projects.

The operation and development centre will be focussed on regional needs, with appropriate research and development activities, and will also support customers via data management, O&M services, and optimising project costs.

John Lavelle, CEO of Offshore Wind at GE Renewable Energy, said: “China is poised to become one of the largest offshore wind markets in the world, and according to Guangdong’s Offshore Development Master Plan, 66 GW will come from the Guangdong region alone towards 2030. The cutting-edge technology of our Haliade-X 12 MW, the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine, will bring value to our customers in the region. Our new factory in Jieyang and the Operation & Development Center in Guangzhou will put us in a better position to meet our customer’s demands in this fast-growing industry, while contributing to meet China’s growing offshore wind ambitions.”
