Maine Governor Janet Mills showcased the state's commitment to responsible offshore wind development during a keynote address at the Oceantic Network’s International Partnering Forum (IPF) in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event, a gathering of offshore wind industry leaders, government officials, and stakeholders, provided a platform for Governor Mills to highlight Maine’s strides in offshore wind energy.

Governor Mills announced a significant milestone in Maine’s renewable energy journey: the initiation of the process to procure up to 3,000 MW of offshore wind energy by 2040. This move, outlined in the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) release of a Request for Information (RFI), underscores Maine's dedication to fostering sustainable energy practices, stabilising energy costs, and stimulating economic growth across the state.

The RFI seeks input from various stakeholders to inform the state's first commercial offshore wind solicitation for the Gulf of Maine. This step, in accordance with recommendations from the Maine Offshore Wind Roadmap, signifies a pivotal moment in Maine's quest for responsible offshore wind development, with a focus on engaging the public and ensuring transparency throughout the process.

Reflecting on the significance of this milestone, Governor Mills stated, "Offshore wind offers Maine the opportunity to generate clean, homegrown energy, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, to create good-paying jobs, and to protect our environment for future generations."

Dan Burgess, Director of GEO, emphasised the importance of stakeholder engagement in shaping Maine's offshore wind solicitation, highlighting the commitment to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable energy to households and businesses while addressing environmental concerns.

The RFI invites feedback on various aspects of Maine’s offshore wind solicitation approach, including regional coordination, fisheries protection, workforce development, and environmental impacts. Responses will inform the solicitation design process, scheduled for completion by July 2025.

During the IPF conference, Governor Mills participated in a panel discussion on collaboration in advancing offshore wind, underscoring the importance of cooperation among industry stakeholders and government bodies.

The announcement also included updates on offshore wind developments in Maine, including the designation of the final Wind Energy Area for the Gulf of Maine and the selection of Sears Island as the preferred site for a port to service floating offshore wind. These initiatives aim to position Maine as a leader in the offshore wind industry, fostering job creation and economic growth.

Maine's commitment to clean energy aligns with its goal of reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and promoting economic resilience. Recent reports have highlighted the cost-saving benefits of renewable energy initiatives, further emphasising the importance of Maine's renewable energy targets.

The Maine Offshore Wind Roadmap, a collaborative effort involving stakeholders from various sectors, serves as a comprehensive guide for Maine to realise the economic, energy, and climate benefits of offshore wind while ensuring the well-being of local communities and ecosystems.

Governor Mills' advocacy for offshore wind underscores Maine's dedication to sustainable energy solutions and sets a precedent for responsible energy development on a global scale.
