NKT is initiating operations to install the horizontal directional drilled (HDD) landfall for the 600 MW Shetland HVDC Link, at Noss Head in Scotland. The operations will run from 2nd July to 20th September 2021.

The operations will be conducted approximately 400 metres offshore, in water depths of nearly 19 metres. The work details include diving operations at Noss Head to assist with the HDD exit points for the link, set up a mooring and anchoring system to support the diver, and a high-resolution marine survey to determine the exit point of the HDD holes. The survey will involve the use of Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) and Sidescan Sonar (SSS).

The
320 kV Shetland HVDC link will transport renewable energy from Shetland islands to areas of demand in Scotland. The 257 km HVDC cable will be manufactured and installed by NKT cables. The HVDC cable is planned to be installed in three phases, starting in Q2-2022 and ending in Q1-2023. The project is scheduled to go online in 2024.
