Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) secured a contract with Petrofac for the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) Alpha project, an offshore wind farm grid connection project being developed in the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The 700MW grid connection project will transmit electricity generated by the offshore wind turbines at the Hollandse Kust Zuid I&II wind farm to the Dutch onshore grid. It is scheduled to go into service in 2021.

HMC's scope covers the transport and installation of the
HKZ Alpha HVAC platform. This platform is a high-voltage substation used to transform electricity before being transmission to the mainland, in this case the Maasvlakte.

The jacket (2,800 metric tonnes) for the HKZ Alpha substation will be installed in the second quarter of 2020 and the topside (3,800 metric tonnes) in the fourth quarter of 2020.The installation will be performed by one of Heerema’s newest vessels
Sleipnir, a semi-submersible heavy lift crane vessel.

CEO Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven: "Heerema is very excited to support Petrofac and TenneT in the development of this project in the North Sea. It also gives us the opportunity to contribute to the realization of the Dutch government's clean energy targets. Heerema is continuously seeking opportunities to strengthen its position in the international offshore market through innovation, pro-activity and reliability. This project fits Heerema’s agenda to participate in innovative and sustainable projects. Our vessels are ideally suited to install the additional infrastructure needed to increase the Dutch offshore electricity production capacity."

Petrofac secured a contract from Dutch-German transmission grid operator TenneT for HKZ Alpha and Beta projects back in July 2018. With a contract value of approximately US$200 million, Petrofac will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the platforms.

TenneT will operate the platform which forms part of its grid connection project for Hollandse Kust Zuid I&II. The company has officially been appointed as offshore grid operator in the Netherlands, and aims to develop at least 3,500 MW of offshore-connections by 2023; all with a standardised concept of 700 MW per connection.
