The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced new Feed-in Tariff (FIT) rates for fiscal year 2020. It will be applied for projects approved after April 2020 with floating offshore wind projects will be subject to a FIT of 36 JPY + tax(10%) / kWh.

Waters surrounding Gotō City is the only offshore area, requiring only floating foundations as it features waters ranging between 100-150m. This offshore wind area has been confirmed as a specific
auction area  for floating projects.

According to regional grid companies there is connection capacity for 21 MW, although an auction capacity constraint has not been set. Projects under 30MW can apply under the existing system for a FiT certificate. Larger projects must proceed with the FiP process.

Auction areas for fixed foundations have also been determined in two different Prefectures: Chiba Prefecture off
Choshi, and Akita Prefecture off Yurihonjo and Noshiro-Mitane-Oga.

Japan currently has 29 projects, totalling a combined capacity of around 14 GW, are in different stages of the Environmental Impact Assessment Process (EIA). A further nine projects, totalling 3.6 GW, are conducting feasibility studies.
