Japanese jack-up vessel will be big

Japan-based Shimizu Corporation has announced plans to build the world’s largest installation vessel. The “highly efficient self-propelled SEP [Self-Elevating Platform] vessel” will enter construction soon, with completion scheduled for October 2020.

According to Shimiz, the vessel will be 50 metres wide and 142 metres long, with a 28,000-tonne payload. It will be capable of lifting up to 2,500 tonnes at a maximum height of 158 metres. Shimiz anticipates that this vessel will be used to install some of the world’s biggest and most powerful offshore wind turbines. The company hopes to secure EPC contracts in the near future on the strength of its SEP vessels.

New offshore wind legislation came into force in Japan in 2018. The General Waters Bill provides 30-year marine use contracts for at least five promotional zones by 2030, though the scale (MW) has not yet been allocated. It was a milestone in solving the once biggest problem in development, marine use rights.

At the moment, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) are working with regional councils to identify promotion zones and to outline a capacity bidding system.

Shimizu Corporation plans to spend approximately JPY 50 billion (EUR 413.3 million) on this project.
