Nexans has secured a contract to supply 200km of 245 kV cross-linked polyethylene insulated (XLPE) cable which will form the export cable system for the Hornsea Project Two offshore wind farm.

The contract was awarded by project developers Ørsted and is valued in excess of 150 million euros. The cables will be manufactured at Nexans's facility in Halden, Norway.

The three-core High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) submarine cables will form part of the near shore section of the export circuits linking the wind farm’s reactive power substation to the onshore substation. The circuits will make landfall at Horseshoe Point from where land cables will feed the power to the North Killingholme onshore substation.

Located in the North Sea, approximately 89km from the Yorkshire coast, the 1.4GW
Hornsea Project Two offshore wind farm will be the world’s largest once it starts operating. The project secured a Contract for Difference in September 2017 and will feature 165 Siemens Gamesa turbines for the project. When operational in 2022, project is expected to produce enough electricity to meet the demand of over 1.3 million homes.

Hornsea Project Two is located nearby another of Ørsted’s projects, the 1.2GW Hornsea Project One wind farm where foundation installation is underway. The project is poised to commissioned in 2020. Siemens Gamesa has been commissioned to supply 174 SWT-7.0-154 turbines which are expected to produce power for more than 1 million homes.

Nexans Norway is also one of the contractors for
Hornsea Project One and was commissioned to supply 139 km of three-phase 36 kV subsea cable inter-linking a total of 58 wind turbines and connecting them to the offshore transformer station.
