Norway proposes new wind sites

By: Tom Russell 02/07/2019 Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy
The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has published its proposals to open area in the Utsira Nord and Sandskallen-Sørøya North for offshore wind energy development. The Ministry also asks for input on the Sørlige Nordsjø II area.

The sites must be opened by the King before any applications can be submitted for licenses relating to renewable energy production at sea. Utsira Nord lies west of Utsira and Haugalandet and holds potential for floating wind power. The area is large, close to land, and thus has the ability to facilitate both demonstration projects and larger projects.

Sandskallen-Sørøya North lies northwest of Hammerfest and has both shallow and some deeper areas. Both floating and bottom-proof technology have potential here according to the Ministry.

Sørlige Nordsjø II lies far from land and borders on the Danish economic zone south-east in the North Sea. The area has depths that make it possible to develop floating wind power. It lies within an area which has traditionally been associated with petroleum activities.

The Ministry is also seeking feedback on a proposal for a regulation that clarifies the licensing process. Responses must be submitted before 1 November 2019.
