Ocean Winds has revealed Japan's Floating Offshore Wind Energy Group, a group of six companies with the aim of promoting a vision statement for the development of floating offshore wind in Japan.

This group includes Ocean Winds, Equinor, Shell, Sumitomo Corporation Global Metals, JGC and Toda Corp. They recently published a report ‘Expectation and Foresight of FOW in Japan’, aimed at promoting strategic development plans for large-scale and domestic industrial development.

They proposed to set a target of 2-3GW by 2030, highlighted the need for industrialising and maturing the market to reduce costs of FOW, and underlined the importance of setting up dedicated committees to discuss FOW issues and charting a clear path towards the creation of a business environment.

The Japanese government aims to deploy 30-45GW of offshore wind by 2040 and aims for net zero emissions by 2050. Achieving the target of 30-45GW in 2040 means that more than 2.0-3.5GW/yr of offshore wind projects need to be created from 2030 onwards.
