Ocean Winds, Ørsted and Vattenfall join GROW's monopile project

Ocean Winds, Ørsted and Vattenfall decided to participate and actively contribute to GROW's Sustainable Installation of XXL Monopiles (SIMOX) project.

SIMOX seeks to get a better understanding of several innovative technologies that are potentially suitable for the installation of XXL monopiles, as an alternative to conventional impact hammering. The project is now ten months in progress. Onshore and offshore tests are currently being prepared, with the offshore tests expected to be executed in the fall of 2022.

According to GROW, the extra income from the new parties will be used to broaden the scope and to cover any contingencies. The project now consists of 17 parties in total.

SIMOX will investigate and test various installation techniques, of which the degree of technical development differs from each other. This includes the use of vibratory driving with a purely vertical excitation. It will also investigate
the Gentle Driving of Piles concept, which is an emerging technology that combines a vertical vibratory excitation with a high-frequency torsional shaking.

SIMOX will also assess the controlled fluidisation technique, aiding these vibratory techniques in reducing the soil resistance at the inside of the pile.

Furthermore, SIMOX will investigate Blue Piling, a modification to the conventional impact driving that reduces noise. It will be included in the modelling of driveability and noise prediction, based on data generated outside of SIMOX.
