Orange Marine has successfully completed its first offshore wind project, marking a significant milestone in the company's history. On May 14, the installation campaign for the export cable of the Golfe du Lion floating wind farm was completed. This achievement follows 40 cumulative vessel days of work.

The cable installation was a collaborative effort led by DEME Group's cable layer Viking Neptun, which laid the 18 kilometre cable manufactured at JDR's Hartlepool facility in the UK. Orange Marine's newly built cable layer, Sophie Germain, played a key supporting role in this operation. This marks the first involvement of an Orange Marine vessel in the offshore wind sector.

Orange Marine, a division of French telecom operator Orange, traditionally specialises in the installation and repair of telecom cables. The company operates a fleet of four cable layers, two of which, Sophie Germain and Pierre de Fermat, are also equipped to handle power cables.

The successful participation of Sophie Germain in this project raises the question of whether this will be a one-time venture or a strategic move for Orange Marine into the offshore wind market.

The Golfe du Lion wind farm, developed by OW Ocean Winds, is anticipated to be fully commissioned by the end of the year, boasting a total capacity of 30 MW. Situated off the coast of Le Barcarès in the Mediterranean Sea, the wind farm employs floating foundations suitable for the water depths ranging between 67 and 72 metres.
