Reports indicate that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has given the green light to the proposed inter-island connection project between Palawan and Mindoro Islands. This potential endeavor is touted as a pivotal move towards bolstering the national grid's capacity.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is believed to have suggested this ambitious interconnection project. By harnessing the capabilities of submarine cables, the plan aims to augment Palawan's energy supply by integrating it with the main Luzon power grid.

Amidst reports of delays in disbursing Universal Charge Missionary Electrification (UCME) subsidies from the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) to operational power plants in Palawan and Mindoro, both areas have purportedly experienced recurrent power outages. This situation underscores the pressing need for infrastructure enhancements to ensure reliable power distribution.

In an apparent response to these energy challenges, President Marcos Jr. has purportedly taken additional measures. It is rumoured hat he has instructed officials to explore alternative sources of renewable energy (RE) across the country. While the exact details of these directives remain unconfirmed, the alleged discussions centre around diversifying the energy portfolio beyond conventional sources.

Given that around 125 remote islands are serviced by smaller power utility groups, the supposed discourse also involves fostering a broader utilization of renewable energy resources. While solar energy has gained attention, the exploration seems to extend to other ecologically friendly technologies.

Sources suggest that the executive leadership is advocating for a holistic utilization of renewable energy sources. If accurate, this stance is believed to be aligned with an overarching objective of not only providing electricity to residences but also supporting rural enterprises through energy-driven development.

These initiatives appear to align with President Marcos Jr.'s articulated vision of achieving universal electrification across the nation, as outlined in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA). The potential impact of these purported actions on the Philippines' energy landscape is generating significant attention.
